We remember this week. We remember the saints who have gone from this earthly life.
Our first Sunday in November worship service—a festival of music and readings titled “In Full and Endless Light”— and points us toward the honor we ascribe to those we've loved and those we now grieve.
The tensions of grief find resolution in the lux aeterna, or eternal light of God, for in God we find a promise not only for ourselves, but a promise of redemption for the world. And so this
week, as we remember those we love and miss, we also remember Jesus’ promise at
table with his disciples and we offer witness again to his resurrection.
Our Christian hope does not deny grief; our Christian hope is not glib or shallow; our Christian hope leads us toward that still small light even in the darkest moments, reminding us that we will one day live with all the saints in full and endless light. I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors; even so saith the Spirit. (Revelation 14)
Let eternal light shine upon them, O Lord;
with Thy saints forever, for thou art merciful.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and may light perpetual shine on them.
